The Saint David of Wales Lecture & Confortare Award 2026

Founded in 1941 during the turmoil of the Second World War, St David’s Marist Inanda emerged from a bold and faith-filled vision of the Marist Brothers. Expanding on the legacy of Marist Koch Street (1889) and Marist Observatory (1924), the new College responded to growing demand while committing itself to a values-based education rooted in the spirit of St Marcellin Champagnat.

At its opening, Brother Osmond affirmed the vital role of independent schools as guardians against ideological control: A conviction that would echo powerfully through the apartheid years, when Marist and Catholic schools offered an alternative moral compass grounded in dignity and courage.

Blessed by Bishop David O’Leary OMI, who named the school after his patron saint, St David’s remains connected to Saint David of Wales, celebrated annually on 1 March.

To honour this heritage, the College introduced the Saint David of Wales Lecture and Confortare Award in 2025. The Lecture invites distinguished members of the Marist community to share insights shaped by lives of purpose and leadership. Following the inaugural address by Cardinal Stephen Brislin, the powerful and inspiring 2026 Lecture was delivered by Mr Charles Rowlinson (Class of 1972), whose life reflects the enduring influence of a Marist education.

The Confortare Award recognises those who have served or been formed by the College and who exemplify humility, simplicity, courage and conviction in their contribution to society. The first award was conferred posthumously on Brother Jude Pieterse (1939–2022).

At the 2026 ceremony, the honour was bestowed upon Mr Kevin Brewer, former Chairman of the Board of Governors and founding Trustee of the St David’s Marist Foundation.

More than a celebration, the Lecture and Award reaffirm a living legacy of faith-led leadership and service.
