St David's Hockey Teams Grow in Size and Strength

9 Apr 2026

Over the past fortnight, the St David’s hockey programme has delivered a compelling statement of intent, one defined not merely by results, but by visible resilience and an increasingly cohesive identity across all age groups.

The U14A side set the tone with an intensive schedule, travelling to Uplands College for the Independent Schools Hockey Festival before competing locally at the Parktowns U14A Festival. Across nine fixtures, they secured five wins, three draws and suffered just a single narrow defeat. With 15 goals scored and only five conceded, this group is rapidly establishing itself as both defensively disciplined and offensively assured, clear indicators of a team evolving with confidence and structure.

The U15As, competing above their age group at the Jeppe U16B Mercian Festival, demonstrated the kind of character that defines long-term success. While results reflected one draw and three losses, the context is critical: facing physically stronger, older opposition, the team showed marked improvement with each outing. Their upward trajectory over the course of the festival signals a group that is learning quickly, adapting intelligently, and building toward a promising season ahead.

At U16 level, the Independent Schools Hockey Festival at St. Andrew's School provided a high-performance environment in which the side thrived competitively. Two strong victories were complemented by three narrow losses, all within tightly contested matches. The consistency of their competitiveness across all fixtures reflects a maturing squad capable of matching top-tier opposition and pushing games to the margins.

The 2nd XI’s participation in the Krugersdorp High School 1st Team Festival further underscored the programme’s depth. Competing against senior first teams, they recorded one win, one draw and three losses. More significantly, their ability to consistently create scoring opportunities across all matches highlights a growing tactical confidence and attacking cohesion, an encouraging sign of the strength within the broader system.

At the pinnacle, the 1st XI delivered a commanding performance at the St Stithians College Festival, winning four of their five matches. With 20 goals scored and just five conceded, the side demonstrated both attacking fluency and defensive solidity, with Milan Stipcevich leading the scoring charts with six goals. While a 3–0 loss to Hilton College provided a moment of reflection, the immediate response from our 1st Team - three consecutive victories - spoke volumes about the team’s resilience. Most notably, a comeback win against Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool Hockey, overturning a 2–0 deficit to claim a 3–2 victory, epitomised the fighting spirit now embedded within the squad.

Taken collectively, these performances point to a hockey department not only competing, but progressing with purpose. There is a clear alignment between development and performance, with each team contributing to a broader culture of growth and ambition. With a substantial portion of the season still ahead, the trajectory is unmistakably upward and the foundations being laid suggest that this is a programme building toward sustained excellence.
