A word from Mike Thiel (Executive Headmaster) on the Matric Class of 2025 IEB Results
Dear St David’s Marist Inanda Community
100% Matric Pass Rate and 100% BD Pass Rate for Class of 2025!
Each year the announcement of our matric results is a celebration and we are delighted to share the IEB examination results of the St David’s Marist Inanda Matric Class of 2025. Not only has this group of 127 matriculants continued a long-standing legacy of a 100% Matric Pass rate, but they have done so with the rare achievement of a 100% Bachelor Degree (BD) Pass rate. The strength of the Class of 2025 lay not only in the discipline of their individual application to their studies but also in the quiet collective support of each other to achieve as a group. This was a style evident in all aspects of their school leadership in 2025 and I ask you to join us in congratulating them on both their excellent academic achievements and a strong commitment to their school over the years.
Each boy has achieved to his personal capacity and the results reflect the effort put in. With 6 boys (3 Commendable and 3 Outstanding) placed in the IEB Achiever categories, 8 boys achieving a 90% or above average (and another 27 boys achieving over 80% average), these top results are indeed exceptional. A notable achievement was that over three-quarters of the candidates achieved at least one subject distinction, showing the breadth of excellence in the teaching they received and that individual passion and hard work is always rewarded. With 37 boys achieving over 4 distinctions and a collective total of 329 distinctions across the 22 subjects written, it was no surprise that almost two-thirds of the class achieved an A or B average. Significant highlights included 99% achievements in both Mathematics and Engineering, Graphics & Design, and subject distinction rates above 50% in Mathematics, Information Technology, Life Sciences, Visual Arts, Mathematical Literacy and Engineering, Graphics & Design. With 19 of our St David’s subject averages above the IEB averages (Mathematics leading the pack at 13%, Science at 12% above, Accounting 12% above and Life Sciences 10% above), it is clear that both the staff and the boys worked hard to achieve this stellar set of results. The quality of achievements across a range of subjects from the Languages, Mathematics, the Sciences, the Arts, Commerce and Humanities is a reminder again that our boys have remarkable opportunity to access and achieve in whatever their individual passion area is, opening the doors to further study, career paths and personal interests.
We remember that the class of 2025 started their College journey in the thick of the Covid pandemic and spent almost 18 months of this formative time in their high school career either online or in hybrid teaching. It is testament to their teachers that this did not provide permanent disruption, and every boy still received quality education and every opportunity to excel academically and grow in their personal development. It is further testament to the boys themselves who pulled together and supported one another both through that time and also once back at school in person. The level of school involvement from this cohort of boys was exceptional – taking full advantage of the diverse sporting, cultural, leadership, religious and service-based opportunities offered to them. Many excelled at provincial and national level in addition to their academic achievements. They truly embraced the call to be fully involved and to serve those around them that is the core of a Marist education!
Our Matric Class of 2025 provided leadership and inspiration across both our campuses (Sandton and Alexandra) and leave with strong experience in leading for social justice and living impactful lives – critical for our country and our world in the adult life they now enter.
The academic results in the IEB NSC examinations are their final accomplishment in their school journey of achievements and these belong firstly to the boys, but also to those who walked the journey from boys to men with the class of 2025. The teachers from their pre-school and preparatory school years, those who focused them in the messy early teen years of Grade 8 and 9, and of course those who encouraged a culture of curiosity and love of work in preparation for the final examinations all played a part and I commend the St David’s Marist Inanda teaching staff on a job very well done. Thank you to those who worked with the boys outside of the classrooms, who provided the administrative support, the sport and cultural coaching and the character formation both formal and informal. Congratulations to the parents, guardians, benefactors and extended families whose support of their sons and the school has enabled these young men to thrive and flourish. You have been quality supporters and it has been a privilege to share this journey with each of these families.
As the Matric Video (click here) reminds us, James Askew (Head of School 2025) asked the school to set a tone of working together to achieve as brothers. The Class of 2025 went on to do just that and whilst we take this opportunity to showcase our top academic achievers, we celebrate every one of our boys. Each has travelled a different and personal journey with its own challenges and unique circumstances, and we stand in admiration of all of them and what they have achieved, today and throughout their time at St David’s. We share below a list of our top achievers and a summary of some of our results.
We wish these young men every success and happiness as they now leave us as school boys and join the ranks of 84 years of alumni. We look forward to watching their progress and to welcoming them back as Old Boys in the years to come. We have no doubt that they will continue to live their Marist values and to have an impact in the world.
Yours in Marist education
Mike Thiel
