Dear Parents

What a ‘short, sharp term’ that was! The school days may have been few but the accomplishments were many.

Wedding Bells!

We extend our very best wishes to Cheryl White (currently teaching Grade 2) who is getting married this weekend. I’m sure you join with us in wishing Cheryl and Craig everything of the best on their special day and lots of love and happiness for the future. Upon her return Cheryl will be Mrs Vermeulen!

Farewell ‘Coach’

Last year Mr Ronnie Carr ‘retired’ from St David’s and we held a farewell function for him. As matters turned out, he stayed on in a temporary capacity to help us out whilst we sourced another coach with the understanding that when we found one, Ronnie would step down. After a number of ‘dead end streets’ we have finally managed to find a very capable, suitably qualified replacement for Ronnie. His name is Richard Wood and in addition to being a competent coach and cricketer himself, he has the added advantage of being a St David’s Old Boy.

We thank Ronnie once again for all the hard work he has done over the years in our school and I’m very confident that we will still see him from time to time as this school has special memories for him.

Pilgrimage

The Marist Brothers, owners of our school, organise a bi-annual Pilgrimage to France and Rome. The purpose of this is to immerse our educators and managers in Marist philosophy. Delegates are taken to Marcellin Champagnat’s place of birth, his first school and other places of significance in his life. One such site is the place where ‘Marcellin’s miracle’ occurred and which was recognised by the Vatican as significant in the process towards his being declared a Saint.

This year, Mrs Pat Milne, our Head of Department in the Pre-school, together with Father Chaka and Mrs Glanville, who teaches in the high school will be attending the Pilgrimage We wish them a most fulfilling trip.

Rugby

Last weekend our boys were involved in their first ‘tackle’ rugby festivals at five different schools. I remained at St David’s to watch the Under 10’s. What a tremendous occasion it was! We have some tearaway players, even at that level! Some of the tackles were worthy of Bakkies Botha (only from an intensity perspective!) and some of the running equal to that of Bryan Habana. For the record – we played 25 matches in all and won 22, drew 2 and lost 1. We are grateful for the assistance in coaching provided by our high school staff.

We now move into hockey season.

Inter-house Quiz

This was held on Wednesday and each House had a team of four Grade 6/7 contestants. The ‘audience’ sat in House rows too. This year we changed the format of the quiz and there were audio and visual categories as well as the general knowledge questions. Some of the visual categories were: Indentify the famous sports personalities, famous entertainers, faces from the past and Dingbats (word art) The audience was also included with questions directed at them. The results were:

1st                      : College - 68 points. (Kyle Land, David & Michael Cardoso, Matthew Wright.)

2nd                    : Bishops – 66 points. (Morne Roos, Guy Waterhouse, Gerard Merchak, James Horsfall)

3rd                     : Osmond - 62 points (Dhanya’l Mayet, Ryan Price, Andrea Giuricich, Simon Haddon)

4th                     : Benedict - 55 points (Keiron Frost, Nicholas Harrison, Connor Ackermann, Chris Lane-Mitchell)

We join in wishing you a happy holiday with your sons and if you are travelling – please drive carefully.

Smile Awhile! (Divorce material?)

I got my son an iPhone for his birthday the other week and recently got

my daughter an iPod for hers. I was really chuffed when the family

clubbed together and bought me an iPad for Father's day.

Got my wife an iRon for her birthday. I still don’t understand as it was around then the fight started......

Reflection

How can I walk with God today?

God does not ask us to bear our crosses alone – to feel scared or lonely or confused – in isolation. He is there for us each day, each moment, loving us with infinite care and compassion. God also shares with us the gift of His Word. We draw strength and insight from Scripture, prayer and from the wisdom of our fellow travellers, our brothers and sisters who, like us, journey in faith through life’s joys and sorrows.

Father Chaka Motanyane

Fr Chaka will be leading the Marist Pilgrimage to Rome and France as Chaplain from 6 to 21 September 2010. Nicci Glanville and Pat Milne will be accompanying him from St David’s. We wish them a blessed and deeply spiritually rewarding Pilgrimage.

First  Fridays  In The Fourth Term – 2010

Please diarize:

  • Friday 1st October
  • Friday 5th November

There will only be two more First Friday devotions in the Chapel of Mary this year when there will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 8.30 am until 12.45 when there will be Benediction.

If you are willing to spend some time praying for our St David’s family, please phone Verushka on 082 600 8119.  It would be wonderful if we could have one parent from each class for every 30 minute session in the chapel during these mornings.  Everyone welcome!

History of the First Fridays

St Margaret Mary Alacoque was born in 1647 in France.  She entered the convent at Pary-le-Monial.  While she was praying in the chapel there, Our Lord appeared to her and inspired her to start the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus – with special reference to the first Friday of every month.  Here at St David’s, we’re trying to follow her example.

THE  RELICS  OF  ST  THERESE  OF  LISEAUX are still in South Africa and will be at the following parishes in Johannesburg:

25 August      -  Cathedral of Christ the King from noon till  26 August 10.30 am

Inter Schools Cross Country Meeting on

Dear Parents

The recent one-day strike in the public sector caused a good deal of disruption and at the time of writing – there doesn’t seem to be much progress towards a resolution of the wage dispute. We watch developments with great interest as our Independent Schools are inextricably linked with State Schools. Whatever occurs in the State sector has spill-over ramifications in the Private sector. On the employment side, we have to ensure that we remain competitively favourable in terms of salaries whilst at the same time being mindful of trying to remain as affordable as possible. Unlike State schools – we receive no subsidy whatsoever and we have no other stream of income aside of our school fees, hence the importance of fee collection. We appeal to all parents to ensure that all fees are settled – no matter how small the outstanding balance. Every Rand counts. Sadly, across both sections of the school we experience unacceptable debt situations. We will always try to be reasonable in difficult times, but we draw the line when we hear of families travelling overseas or purchasing luxury cars whilst their account remains in debt. We will be left with no alternative but to start asking frequent fee offenders to find alternative schooling for their sons. Fortunately, we can do this as we have substantial waiting lists.

We gain little advantage and certainly no pleasure when we hear of the difficulties our colleagues in the State sector face. We depend on a strong State education system to keep us from becoming complacent about our own standards. We enjoy our sporting contact with children from State schools. Of course those who suffer most in wage disputes are the children. I fear for those preparing for their school leaving examinations. Any prolonged ‘stay-aways’ will ultimately adversely affect those children’s chances of gaining entrance into universities and thereafter fulfilling their employment aspirations. We hope that an amicable settlement is reached soon so that normality is returned in State schools.

Prep History in the making?

This weekend sees our Prep school play contact rugby for the first time. It is therefore prudent that I pass on to you some ‘sighters’ as to what you can expect.

We are playing in 5 different age group festivals at different schools. Our boys have been working hard on gaining skills towards playing their first game but have never played a match as such. We therefore need to have realistic expectations.

One thing we have noticed though is that (as predicted) we are picking up more injuries than we did when playing ‘touch’ rugby. At the risk of sounding alarmist - injuries are sadly almost inevitable in contact rugby. We have been assured that each venue will have the requisite medical personnel in attendance including an ambulance should the need arise.

Rugby can sometimes stir dim memories in Dads! Former (exaggerated) glories are recalled and expectations of Junior on the field become the focus of that bygone enthusiasm. Being a physical game – there are strong exhortations to players to ‘get stuck in!’ Please remember that your son is not Pierre Spies yet! We respectfully ask that you don’t embarrass the following people with inappropriate behaviour or comments: your son, our coaches, your wife and importantly, yourself!

We hope that our boys will enjoy their first taste of the realities of this great game. Like the Trinidad Olympic bobsleigh team – we are ‘work in progress!’

The Cowboy And Saint Peter

A cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. 'Have you ever
done anything of particular merit?' St. Peter asked.
'Well, I can think of one thing,' the cowboy offered.

'On a trip to the Black Hill in South Dakota, I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman.  I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen.  So, I approached the largest and most tattooed biker and smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground.  I yelled, 'Now, back off or I'll kick the daylights out of all of you!'
St. Peter was impressed, 'When did this happen?' he asked.

'Couple of minutes ago,' the cowboy replied.

Enjoy your weekend!

Rick Wilson

Reflection

How Much

There once was a man named George Thomas, a pastor in a small New England town. One Easter Sunday morning he came to the Church carrying a rusty, bent, old bird cage, and set it by the pulpit. Several eyebrows were raised and, as if in response, Pastor Thomas began to speak.

“I was walking through town yesterday when I saw a young boy coming toward me, swinging this bird cage. On the bottom of the cage were three little wild birds, shivering with cold and fright. I stopped the lad and asked, “What you got there son?”

“Just some old birds,” came the reply.

“What are you gonna do with them?” I asked.

“Take them home and have fun with them. I’m gonna tease them and pull out their feathers to make them fight. I’m gonna have a real good time.”

“But you’ll get tired of those birds sooner or later. What will you do then?”

“Oh, I got some cats. They like birds. I’ll take ‘em to them.”

The pastor was silent for a moment. “How much do you want for those birds, son?”

“Huh??! Why, you don’t want them birds, mister. They’re just plain old field birds. They don’t sing – they ain’t even pretty!”

“How much?”

The boy sized up the pastor as if he were crazy and said, “$10?”

The pastor reached in his pocket and took out a ten dollar bill. He placed it in the boy’s hand. In a flash, the boy was gone. The pastor picked up the cage and gently carried it to the end of the alley where there was a tree and a grassy spot. Setting the cage down, he opened the door, and by softly tapping the bars persuaded the birds out, setting them free.

Well, that explained the empty bird cage on the pulpit, and then the pastor began to tell this story.

One day Satan and Jesus were having a conversation. Satan had just come from the Garden of Eden, and he was gloating and boasting. “Yes, sir, I just caught the world full of people down there. Set me a trap, used bait I knew they couldn’t resist. Got ‘em all!”

“What are you going to do with them?” Jesus asked.

“Oh, I’ll kill ‘em.”

“How much do you want for them?”

“Oh, you don’t want those people. They ain’t no good. Why, you’ll take them and they’ll just hate you. They’ll spit on you, curse you and kill you!! You don’t want those people!”

 “How much?”

Satan looked at Jesus and sneered, “All your tears, and all your blood.”

Jesus paid the price.

The pastor picked up the cage, he opened the door and he walked from the pulpit.

THANK YOU JESUS. Not all of us hate you. Your loving children.

Father Chaka Motanyane

My School Card

Dear Parents

As you may or may not know, MySchool is an initiative that raises money for Schools through the swipe of a card.  It can be used at a growing number of outlets and when you swipe the card, 0.5% of the value of your spend is donated to the school of your choice.

If you do not have a card, for yourself or for any member of your immediate and extended family, please complete an application form, available from the Prep office.  You will need one for each new card which means even more funds raised for our beautiful school.  Please return this to the school as soon as possible so we can ensure that you get your card.

Making St David’s your beneficiary school will enable us to raise funds for infrastructure development for the benefit of all the boys in the school.

If you already have a card linked to another beneficiary school and wish to change this to St David’s, please reply to this email and we will do what it takes to get that changed.

Finally - If you do have a card and regularly swipe it for the benefit of St Davids – we really appreciate your help.  Thank you so much!

All emails in this regard to be sent to Mrs J West at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Kind regards
