Sports offered at St David's Marist Inanda

The Athletics season is always a very short, intense affair. Our boys participate in the annual Inter-house Athletics and the Independent Schools Quadrangular. Our athletes continue to do themselves proud, producing performances of high quality in difficult circumstances, given the brevity of the season.

Basketball is a relatively new sport at St David's but is growing in strength and numbers. The boys play with enthusiasm and determination and will in time, no doubt, start to make their mark in this sport.

St. David’s has an extremely proud record of achievement in the sport of canoeing. We have been ranked third in South Africa for the last three years and continue to produce a number of provincial and national paddlers. Our programme includes participation in the Fish River Canoe Marathon, Dusi Marathon and the Drak Challenge to name but a few.

St David's has established itself as a premier cricketing school and we continue to be a breeding ground for Gauteng Schools’ representatives at all levels. In the last few years alone St David’s has produced provincial representatives such as Dominic Hendricks, Themba Bavuma and Pumelela Matshikwe.

This success can be credited in no small part to some of the finest coaching staff and facilities in the country: 18 turf and six astro-turf nets to cater for the school’s 15 teams. In order to maintain its level of excellence, the school employs senior professional, Amarinder Bhinder, who played first class cricket in India for two years and has had a stint with MRF Pace Foundation, run by Dennis Lillee.

St. David’s has produced some fine golf teams over the past few years.  Former Captains, James Oberholzer and James Morrison have been awarded scholarships to universities in the United States of America. Our present team has produced some fine performances. We participate in the the Inter-schools league, Dainfern Golf Championship and the St. John’s College International Festival held at Sun City.

In Hockey the School has established itself as one of the top competitors locally and nationally.

St. David’s continues to impress on the Rugby field and despite being a relatively small school has enjoyed tremendous success over their traditional rivals. The Rugby section has fielded sixteen teams for a number of years, and there is strong interest in the sport.

Rugby Season - March to June

The Soccer section has excelled over the past few years and St David’s is rightly viewed as one of the top Soccer schools in the country. The 1st XI has achieved success at competitions such as the Grey College Soccer Tournament, the St Peter’s College Soccer Tournament, the Kloof High School Tournament and the St David’s Challenge Cup. In addition they have performed with distinction in the local fixtures programme.

St David’s swimmers continue to maintain their position as the Top boys’ schools in Johannesburg and Pretoria as well as competing in the annual Ten Schools Gala and Westville Invitational Gala, which includes schools from Natal.

Swimming Season - October to February

St David’s has a strong Tennis tradition, and for many years has put out more teams than most schools in Johannesburg, which reflects the interest in the sport.  At 1st team level, the School has played in the Premier League and the ‘A’ league, which places St David’s in the Top 12 Schools in the province.  The School also participates in a number of local festivals.

The hiring of Stanislav Gospadinov (Bulgarian International) has certainly gone a long way towards improving the standard of Water Polo at St. David’s. No fewer than twenty provincial caps have been achieved since 2005.
