The Adventure Club is one of the activities at St David’s which is offered in addition to the formal extramural programme. The aim of the Adventure Club is to instil in our boys a love of and respect for the environment. We also provide opportunities for them to pursue healthy outdoor activities. Our two main areas of activity are Rock Climbing and Scuba Diving.
Rock climbing takes place on a weekly basis and April 2006 saw the opening of our own climbing wall at St David’s boasting many routes and overhangs, to a height of 9 m. The wall was designed by Roland Maggs, the Chairman of the South African Mountain Club, who is also our coach. Training courses are offered to the boys in basic rope skills and climbing techniques. St David’s climbers participate in the recently formed climbing league. We also offer out climbs to Strubens Valley, Bronkhorstspruit and Waterval Boven. St David’s climbers are a very active group and often help in school fund-raisers and outreach programmes where the new wall is utilized.
The Scuba Diving section of the Adventure Club is also very active. We offer Open Water One courses and speciality dives at least twice a year. We have run diving trips to Sodwana Bay and Punto d’Oro, Mozambique, and the boys’ enthusiasm always ensures the divers head for the coast on a regular basis. Many of the staff at St David’s dive, including our Headmaster, and these trips are fun filled yet well supervise
